AX69 on top of DOCSIS - WiFi Insights and Control using TR-069 in Cable Networks

How AX69 brings advanced WiFi insights in your DOCSIS network

DOCSIS is an established and stable protocol for fully automatic deployment of cable modems. DOCSIS also provides all relevant information to a modem to ensure quality of the internet connection.

Things get tricky however when it comes to the customer's home network behind the cable modem. Here, the WiFi coverage has become the main factor in customer experience, which is reflected accordingly in the customer support. Unfortunately, DOCSIS does not provide any information on the quality of service, so support staff are forced to act blindly and can only give general tips on the placement of the cable modem. As a result, support calls are protracted and it remains unclear whether the customer's situation was improved. This is not a satisfying solution for either side.

To close this gap, modem manufacturers rely on TR-069 - not only to provide WiFi quality data, but also to be able to change WiFi settings or other parameters remotely. For this purpose, an Auto Configuration Server (ACS) is set up in the network, which receives messages from cable modems, evaluates them and displays them as required.

A key advantage of TR-069 is that it can be used by customer devices in existing networks without any significant effort. Technically, the only requirement is to add a URL of the ACS platform to the DOCSIS boot file. Cable modems can then connect automatically to the ACS and deliver quality data regularly - completely autonomous and independent of DOCSIS provisioning. Some configuration changes are even easier to implement with TR-069 than with DOCSIS. For example, in addition to WiFi, VoIP or DHCP configurations can also be adapted without rebooting the modem, because the DOCSIS boot file does not have to be reloaded.

AX69 by Axiros offers the ideal solution to complete existing DOCSIS solutions with TR-069. AX69 can either be installed in the provider network or used as a cloud service - with intuitive user interfaces for support and network operation out-of-the-box.
